Almost two-thirds of annual fireworks-related injuries happen in the 30 days centered on the 4th of July, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Fireworks are a traditional part of 4th of July festivities—but can also be dangerous. Area firefighters have warned of the dangers of consumer fireworks and in Montgomery and Prince George's counties, consumer fireworks are illegal. A recently released study from the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that last year, 65 percent of all fireworks-related injuries in the U.S. occurred in the 30-day period centered on the 4th of July. About 46 percent of those injuries involved the hands, and 34 percent affected the head, face or eyes, the agency reported. Injuries to the eyes are particularly serious. According to Dr. Michael P. Celebrating America is the highlight of my year.
Independence Day—or the Glorious Fourth, if you like—is, without a doubt, my favorite holiday. There is no artifice to the Glorious Fourth, no need to comply with societal pressures to consume 10 percent of GDP or pretend to enjoy the company of layabout relatives. No one stresses over the Fourth of July. Christmas is months' worth of planning and shopping and news about the state of the economy or religion or the secular state viewed through the prism of a holiday. This is not a concern come Independence Day. Typical planning session, on or about July 2: American 1: “Hey, the Fourth is coming up. Want to come over and grill?” American 2: “Sure. I’ll bring the beers.” American 1: “And after it gets dark, we’ll blow something up! Then have …

The entire Washington, DC, metro region, including Montgomery and Prince George's counties, are under a heat advisory, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Although temperatures will remain between 90 and 100 degrees across the region, the heat index could reach 105 degrees. The heat advisory will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. "The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible," the forecasters wrote. NWS asks people to stay out of the sun, stay hydrated, cool off in air-conditioning where available …
Backyard fireworks are illegal in Montgomery County.
If you're thinking of skipping the area's municipal fireworks altogether for a show of your own in the backyard, think twice. All backyard fireworks are still illegal in Montgomery County — including sparklers — and the penalty for owning them comes with a hefty fine. Violations of the fireworks ban may include a fine up to $1,000 and six months in jail, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services. “The law in Montgomery County is clear and the safest, and smartest, way to enjoy fireworks is to enjoy one of the many public displays in the area,” said Montgomery County Fire Chief Richard Bowers. MCFRS participated in a Council of Governments fireworks safety demonstration on June 21. They offer the following safety tips for …

Storms could bring strong winds to the region, says National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Mogomery and Prince George's counties and much of the surrounding Washington, D.C. region. According to the forecast, scattered thunderstorms may roll into the area this evening, some with the potential to produce large hail and powerful winds. For Independence Day, forecasters said that an upper level disturbance could bring severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
