GAITHERSBURG — After a number of serious accidents, the Maryland State Highway Administration plans significant changes to the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Kentlands Boulevard/Orchard Ridge Drive, Gaithersburg police told members of the Quince Orchard Park community on Tuesday. SHA began studying the intersection about a year and a half ago, spurred by an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and severely injured, Officer Scott Scarff said at a Council in the Community meeting. The biggest safety concern surrounds the geometry behind the intersection's design, which prevents motorists from clearly seeing pedestrians in the crosswalk, Scarff said. After the study, SHA recommended six changes for the new intersection's design…

The Maryland State Highway Administration has no plans to reconsider the 50 mph speed limit on Great Seneca Highway (Route 119) following the road's third fatal accident of 2012, SHA spokesperson David Buck told Patch. A 69-year-old Gaithersburg woman was killed Sunday evening in a car crash on Great Seneca Highway at Lakelands Drive in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg. Less than two weeks earlier, a 24-year-old Germantown man was killed after a collision at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Longdraft Road. Film crews were shooting scenes for a training video about older drivers, police and county officials said.
The cameras fixed along portions of Great Seneca Highway on Sunday weren’t there to catch speeders in the act. Film crews were taping scenes for an educational law enforcement video about the driving behaviors of older motorists, according to Catherine Matthews, the director of the Upcounty Regional Services Center in Germantown. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was responsible for the project, with help from the Montgomery County Police Department, Cpt. Thomas Didone told Patch. Portions of Great Seneca Highway and Richter Farm Road were closed Sunday. Filming continued Monday in the Kentland’s region, Didone said. The video would be used to train police officers and medical workers about driving will illnesses, …

If they are going to look at that intersection, they should also evaluate the intersection of Longdraft Road and Quince Orchard, heading onto Kentlands Blvd. . I have been taking that route for several years now and have seen numerous serious accidents due to cars trying to beat the red light coming from longdraft into Kentlands Blvd, and those turning from the Kentlands onto Quince Orchard.
