Weather Related Cancellations

Threat of freezing rain spurs cancellations, schedule changes throughout county.

This list will be updated throughout the day. Tiny Tots Tiny Tot classes scheduled to begin before noon were cancelled today. Montgomery County Public Schools Montgomery County Public Schools opened two hours late due to weather conditions. Bus service will be provided on a two-hour-delayed schedule. Morning prekindergarten, morning half-day Head Start, other morning half-day programs and field trips are canceled. Other activities and programs that begin at 10:30 a.m. or earlier were canceled. Administrative offices opened on time. Day care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled. Montgomery College Montgomery College opened at 10 a.m. due to anticipated hazardous weather conditions.

Wednesday's Wintry Weather Mix Rumples Road Conditions

Forecast called for less than an inch of sleet, ice.

Below-freezing temperatures and a wintery mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet spurred an extended winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties on Wednesday.  The forecast called for accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice, according to the Naitonal Weather Service.  Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. In a statement released by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) administrator Melinda B. Peters urged motorists to "keep their speeds down as lighter traffic can result in increased travel speeds" and "to exercise extreme caution today." Feds Sentence Germantown ICE Impersonator to 8 Years For Fraud Scheme

The U.S. district court sentenced Robert Fred Mejia to eight years in federal prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Deborah Chasanow sentenced Robert Mejia, of Germantown, to eight years in federal prison Monday, followed by three years of supervised release for impersonating a federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Officer, according to a press release from the U.S Department of Homeland Security. Other charges included transporting money obtained by fraud across state lines, transporting money obtained by fraud, being a felon in possession of ammunition and participating in a fraudulent scheme to provide immigration services. U.S. Prosecutors say Mejia, 29, will serve his sentence starting on April 28, 2014. The state of Maryland sentenced him to 11 years and five months in county jail. In addition to serving jail time…
