UPDATE: Police: A Traffic Stop on I-270 Ended in Suicide

State police: The man shot himself after being stopped for not wearing a seatbelt.

Update, 6:20 p.m., Jan. 20: Maryland State Police have identified the driver of the Ford Focus who police said fatally shot himself during a traffic stop on Interstate 270 on Friday afternoon as a 27-year-old Gaithersburg man. The man's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, police said in a news release Sunday. UPDATED: Off-Duty Officer Struck By Vehicle in Germantown

(Updated 11:45 p.m.) An off-duty police officer helping at the scene of a crash was struck by a vehicle that slid off a Germantown off-ramp Tuesday, according to police. Montgomery County Police Officer Fabio Chung was on the ramp from eastbound Route 118 onto southbound Interstate 270 when another vehicle slid off the roadway and struck him and his unmarked cruiser, Montgomery County Police said in a press release late Tuesday. Police said Chung was treated at an area hospital. No other injuries were reported from the scene, police said. Pedestrian Struck by Truck on I-270

Man transported to hospital with traumatic injuries; portion of highway closed

A pedestrian was struck by a truck traveling south on Interstate 270, near Old Hundred Road in Clarksburg. The victim, an adult male, may have been tending to a disabled vehicle. He was transported to the hospital with traumatic injuries, according to Cpt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. Garcia said rescuers were dispatched at around noon. Montgomery County Police and Maryland State Police were investigating the incident. A portion of the highway was shut down, though as of 1 p.m. southbound traffic appeared to be moving slowly, Garcia said. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Child Airlifted After Single Car Crash

Cause of Sunday evening collision is under investigation, according to Montgomery County Police.

A child passenger suffered serious injuries after a vehicle struck a pole at Middlebrook Road and Interstate 270 on Sunday evening. Montgomery County Police and rescuers dispatched to the scene at around 6:40 p.m. found an adult female and a child injured in the single-vehicle crash, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service Cpt. Oscar Garcia. Garcia said the child was flown to a hospital. Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said the child was expected to survive. The adult female was also taken to the hospital, Garcia said. Further information, such as the age and the gender or the age of the child, was unavailable Monday morning. Beer Truck Spill Rattles Thursday Morning Commute

A beer truck spill snarled northbound Interstate 270 traffic for seven hours, state highway officials said.

Cleanup crews spent nearly seven hours cleansing the highway of beer, fuel and wreckage after a tractor trailer overturned Thursday morning, spewing its contents across the traffic lanes of Interstate 270, near the Frederick County, Md., line. No serious injuries were reported, though the beer truck driver, an adult female, was taken to the hospital for treatment, a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokeswoman told Patch. Police said the truck struck a large piece of debris in the roadway, causing it to roll over and collide with the guardrail near the Old Hundred Road exit, shortly after 4 a.m.  The truck was hauling more than 70,000 pounds of Budweiser, WTOP reported.  The driver was cited with failing to secure the cargo, …

Police: I-270 Was a Road to Riches on Friday

Police pledge amnesty for anyone who turns in cash dropped from an armored vehicle.

Friday night's Mega Millions jackpot is $290 million, but on Friday morning, a driver on Interstate 270 might've found a financial windfall of another kind, Maryland State Police said. About 9 a.m. an armored vehicle traveling northbound dropped a load of cash, state police said in a news release. The U.S. currency, in various denominations up to $50 bills, is believed to have fallen from an unsecured door of the armored vehicle somewhere south of Route 109, the release said. One driver told the Associated Press that the scene looked like "a snow globe of cash." Maryland State Police Sgt. Mark Cummings told the AP that two bags containing about $5,700 in cash and coins spilled onto the roadway. State police are asking anyone who picked up …

Update, 11:55 p.m., Sept. 16: Maryland State Police have identified the driver who died when his car struck a fuel truck on Interstate 270 on Friday afternoon as Jelani Omar Prather, 36, of Rockville. Prather was an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department's 5th District in Washington, D.C. Prather was off duty at the time of the crash, which occurred about 12:47 p.m. on the shoulder of the northbound local lanes of I-270 between the Montrose Road and Falls Road exits, according to a state police news release.
