The program would take food that would otherwise be thrown away and redistributes it to people in need.
Gaithersburg-based nonprifits Nourish Now and Manna Food Center were among the regional organizations represented in a work group that will study the costs and logistics for a countywide "food recovery program." In October, Montgomery County Councilwoman Valerie Ervin (D-Dist 5) proposed the idea, which would redistribute would-be wasted food to people in need. The concept gained momentum Tuesday when the County Council approved a work group to study costs and logistics for a food recovery program. Ervin said the idea was inspired by the work of two University of Maryland students. Maryland's program, called the Food Recovery Network, collects unused food from events like football games and alumni parties, and redistributes the food to …

Manna Food Center — Montgomery County's largest food distribution center — is lending a helping hand to more than 300 families in need during Thanksgiving week. The Gaithersburg-based food center will provide 70 pounds of emergency food assistance and donated turkeys to the community, Manna announced Wednesday. Community members can drop off turkey donations to Manna — located at 9311 Gaither Road in Gaithersburg — before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and they will be passed out to families in need. “The community is instrumental in serving our clients throughout the holiday season and during the rest of the year," Manna Executive Director Minerva Delgado said in a statement. The Oct. 21 festival will spotlight the cultures of four of Montgomery County's largest immigrant populations—from China, India, El Salvador and Ethiopia.
WHEATON—The World of Montgomery Festival returns to Wheaton in a few weeks, but with new life breathed into it. The World of Montgomery Festival is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the large parking lot at Grandview Avenue and Reedie Drive. The festival began in 2008, but lack of funding resulted in no festival in 2010. In 2011, the festival came back, featuring a health fair and projects coordinated by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center. In addition to the ethnic food, music and dance performances from years past, this year's festival will highlight the cultures of four large immigrant populations in Montgomery County. The county partnered with the Kid International Discovery Museum to create an International Village…

Manna Food Center distributed about 172,000 70-pound packages of food to needy families during fiscal year 2011, which ended June 30. As the recession continues, the amount of food Manna distributes annually has increased more than two-fold since 2008. Because of federal budget cuts this year, Manna has not received turkeys or other protein items to distribute to needy families for the holiday season. New U.S. Census data show that a record number of Americans are now counted among the ranks of the "poorest poor," or those who live on less than $5,570 annually for an individual or $11,157 for a family of four.
