As Maryland state lacrosse tournament games get underway Wednesday, local varsity softball teams have to wait an extra day to kick off their 2013 run to the state championship. Domestic incident involving parents off of school grounds triggered the alert, police and school officials said.
Two Germantown schools were placed on alert Wednesday morning, due to a domestic incident involving parents off school grounds, police and school officials said. Police were sent to Northwest High School and S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School around 9:30 a.m. in response to threats made in relation to the domestic incident, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said. Police did not provide details of the domestic incident. Outside doors were locked at the schools but classes were conducted as usual, said Gboyinde Onijala, a Montgomery County Public Schools spokeswoman. Jaguars run away with the game in the second half, claim playoff berth.
Richard Montgomery took an early second quarter lead, but eventually was left in the dust of an offensive explosion, falling 54-20 to Northwest in a high school football clash with playoff implications on Friday in Rockville. The Jaguars are in the playoffs, thier 7-3 (4-1 in 4A West) finish earning them the No. 2 seed in the 4A division. Northwest High School hosts dedication ceremony Friday in honor of the late Derek T. Sheely, a former Northwest football player and college athlete who died from a traumatic brain injury he suffered during football practice in 2011.
It’s been more than a year since tragedy struck—when college football player Derek Sheely took a fatal hit during practice at Frostburg State University. But Derek’s parents Kristen and Ken Sheely, with friends and former teammates at Northwest High School, are keeping Sheely’s memory alive, with hopes his story will teach the next generation of football players to recognize the signs of brain injuries, so that they might not share the same fate. Northwest High School was named as one of the top 25 source schools for the University of Maryland's Clark School of Engineering.
Northwest High School was named as one of the University of Maryland's top source schools for its engineering program. Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering recently released its top 25 source schools list. Twelve Montgomery County Public Schools made the list. Other MCPS schools include: Officially, 30 schools were named to account for ties.

Northwest Senior Named National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists Northwest High School senior Adjua K. Jones was among the 22 Montgomery County Public Schools students selected as semifinalists in the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship competition, MCPS announced Wednesday. The scholarship program, administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, recognizes academically promising African-American students across the nation and awards college scholarships to hundreds each year. More than 160,000 students requested consideration for the National Achievement Scholarship Program and 1,600 were named as semifinalists. For the second week in a row, Watkins Mill football support poured in to upset a marquee matchup in the Patch Montgomery County Football Game of the Week Poll. With 41 percent of the vote, Watkins Mill-Damascus will be featured as the Patch Game of the Week. Gaithersburg-Springbrook was second with 18 percent and the highly anticipated Battle for Germantown between Northwest and Seneca Valley finished third with 13 percent.
