Van Hollen Among 68 Reps Calling for Pedestrian, Bike Safety

A bipartisan group of congressional members sends a letter to transportation secretary urging him to find ways to reduce fatalities.

Approximately 5,000 pedestrians and bicyclists are fatally struck by cars in the United States each year, representing a decrease of about 20 percent since the early '90s, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fatalities involving bicyclists and pedestrians represent a higher percentage of all roadway deaths now than in previous years, though, argued members of Congress in a letter urging federal transportation officials to enact safety measures they passed last year in the Moving Ahead in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen Jr. (D-Dist 8), a long time Kensington resident, was one of 68 House members who sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood calling for more action …

Hey Mr. Van Hollen, while you're at it, how about requiring cyclists to use clickers/buzzers/bells or ringers to alert walkers they are coming up behind them, instead of allowing them to zip by at 20 mph without slowing down while I'm trying to walk on Wootton Parkway? It's become so dangerous, they've driven walkers off the paths.   more ›

Remembering ‘Tina’

Seneca Valley students, Germantown community pay tribute to Christina Morris-Ward, teen who was struck, killed while walking to school.

Death is one of those things Seneca Valley student Ramatu Kembe doesn’t quite understand, especially the reason it had to come for her friend and fellow classmate, Christina Morris-Ward. "I miss her a lot and I wish she could be with me,” Kembe said. “But there's a lot of things that we don't understand, and death is one of them. I wish I could have just hugged her before she left, but I couldn't." Kembe was one of several to share memories of the late Christina Morris-Ward, 15, during a vigil outside Seneca Valley High School Monday night. Morris-Ward, a sophomore, was struck and killed by a car as she walked to school on Halloween morning. Amid the air of mourning and tears during the vigil was hope that the community would learn from …

This is a very sad situation for all involved. Think of the guilt that the driver is going to have to live with although it sounds as if they didn't do anything wrong. Luther Reynolds of the Montgomery County Police Department was quoted in the article saying "We all need to model this behavior as adults". This is so true. I live in the Gaithersburg area and way too often I see families(where the…   more ›

Montgomery County Council members discussed pedestrian safety at joint-work session Thursday, The Gazette reports.

The death of a Germantown teen who struck and killed during her morning walk to school framed the discussion of Montgomery County Council members Thursday, The Gazette reports. The council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment and Public Safety committees discussed pedestrian safety as part of a yearly joint work session on the county’s pedestrian safety program. Councilman Phil Andrews, D-Dist. 3, of Gaithersburg, reportedly said the pedestrian death in Germantown Wednesday was a “tragic reminder of the additional work necessary,” according to The Gazette, which offers a full account at its website, Gazette.net. According to police, Christina Morris-Ward, 15, of the 19900 block of Sweetgum Circle, was in the process of …

How much can we do? On Wisteria Drive they have built lane barriers and cross walks at what seems like every few feet. Has become an obstacle course for drivers who have to drive thru them as well as watch for pedestrians. But worse is the fact that with all these cross walks the people still cross everywhere but the cross walks. And driving on Great Seneca at 55 mph is really dangerous with all …   more ›
