5 Red Line Metrorail Stations Close This Weekend

Passengers traveling through the work zone via shuttle bus should allow for about 50 to 60 minutes of additional travel time, Metro advised.

Five Red Line Metrorail stations will close this weekend for scheduled track work, according to Metro's website. The closed stations will be: Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont. Scheduled track work this weekend begins at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, and concludes at system closing on Sunday night. Free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between Fort Totten and Glenmont to allow for track renewal, signal improvements, platform reconstruction and fiber optic cable installation, according to Metro. Red Line trains will run between Fort Totten and Shady Grove every 10 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and every 15 minutes during the remaining operating hours. Metro News: Red Line Weekend Track Work

Metro urges passengers to allow more travel time this weekend.

Red Line trains between Shady Grove and Glenmont will operate every 24 minutes this weekend, according to a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority advisory. Metro is urging passengers to allow 15 minutes of additional travel time. Other stops affected Between 10 p.m. Friday and closing Sunday, Red Line trains will single-track between Takoma and Forest Glen (to allow for platform reconstruction and fiber-optic cable installation) and between Friendship Heights and Medical Center (to allow for third-rail insulator renewal and rail joint elimination for a safer and smoother ride), according to Metro.. Metro: Weekend Red Line Delays

Single-tracking trains will mean delays on the Red Line this weekend.

Red Line travelers will need to tack on 20 extra minutes to their travel times this weekend, Metro advised on its website. Trains will operate every 24 minutes throughout the weekend (from 10 p.m. Friday through closing on Sunday) between the Shady Grove and Glenmont stations. Additional trains will run between the Farragut North and New York Avenue stations from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, providing service every 12 minutes in downtown Washington, according to Metro. Trains will travel on a single track between the Van Ness and Dupont Circle stations; trains will also travel on a single track between the Forest Glen and Takoma stations.
