New campaign uses Ride On buses to promote pedestrian safety.
William Linkens sees it all the time. A pedestrian focused on a smart phone as they approach a busy street. “I see so many people come into the crosswalk—or maybe not even the crosswalk, just to cross the street—and their head never looks up,” said Linkens, a 12-year veteran driver of Montgomery County’s Ride On buses. Ride On is at the heart of a safety campaign that Montgomery County officials hope will prevent pedestrian fatalities on county roads. Two Ride On buses parked on East Montgomery Avenue in Rockville Town Center on Tuesday morning bore the campaign slogan, “Hey you, I’m looking at you!” above a pair of eyes. A recap as playoff games continue Wednesday, Feb. 29.
As high School basketball playoffs inch closer to the March 10 state championship, local teams are fighting for regional dominance. In the Girls 4A West division, Northwest's 60-44 win over Wootton on Monday propels the Jaguars to the regional semifinals, where they'll face Walter Johnson. Game time is 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Jaguar's gym. As for the Girls 3A West, a 48-44 loss to South Hagerstown High School brought Seneca Valley's playoff run to an end Monday. The South Hagerstown Rebels must now face the division's top seed, Damascus, in the regional semifinal on Wednesday. Damascus enters the game with a fresh win against Watkins Mill. Germantown girls' teams advance in playoffs; season ends for Northwest, Seneca Valley boys.
Boys’ Varsity Basketball In the 4A West division, Northwest’s postseason berth ended with a 52-44 loss to Quince Orchard, whose next opponent is regional division leader Magruder. Third-ranked Clarksburg comes off its bye to face No. 11 seed Gaithersburg, a team looking to parlay its defeat of sixth-ranked Kennedy (59-49) into another victory. In the 3A West division, Seneca Valley Eagles fell to Damascus (70-62). In order to stay alive, Damascus (No. 9) must beat the division’s top team, South Hagerstown, on Tuesday.
