Work will impact riders on the Red, Orange and Green lines through system closing Sunday night.
Traveling on Metro this weekend? Stay informed about delays. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in this weekend. The rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange and Green lines. Blue or Yellow lines riders can breathe easy, there is no scheduled track work on either line this weekend. Weekend track work on Metrorail will take a break for four consecutive weekends.
Metro takes a break from its rigorous weekend track work schedule during the cherry blossom season, according to a statement on Metro's website. This year, the break occurs on March 23-24, March 30-31, April 6-7, and April 13-14. According to Metro, the only planned weekend work would take place late Sunday evenings, when ridership is light. Metro ridership increases by an average of more than 15 percent during cherry blossom season and can double to near-weekday levels "if the weather is nice," accoridng to Metro. Shady Grove station on Metro's Red Line is the nearest stop to Germantown and North Potomac. Further information on the track work break is posted on Metro's website.

Plans are in the works for a new $50 million, 6,500 seat arena near Shady Grove Metro, The Gazette reports.
A local develper has sketched out plans for a $50 million, multipurpose arena slated to be built on an 8-acre property next to Shady Grove Metro Station, The Gazette reports. Potomac native William Askinazi, principal for the development company D&A Sports and Entertainment, said he envisions a space "where indoor lacrosse championships could take place simultaneously with antique roadshows," according to the report. "A Taylor Swift concert could dominate the space one night, he said, and a Disney show could take center stage the next night." This weekend Red Line trains will operate every 20 minutes—with the exception of between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, when additional trains will operate between Shady Grove and Judiciary Square, resulting in service at about every 10 minutes between those stations, according to Metro. Metro advised Red Line passengers to allow for about 10 minutes of additional travel time. Red Line trains will single track between Judiciary Square and Rhode Island Avenue this weekend, starting through closing Sunday, according to Metro's website. Metro riders won't see a break in weekend track work delays anytime soon, The Washington Examiner reports.
Intensive track work on the Metrorail system could last four more years, The Washington Examiner reports. Metro is working to complete an "extensive backlog" of work, said Metro General Manager Richard Sarles, according to the report. "In looking at the forecast of work we have to do to just get us back to where we were 10 years ago, it will take us about another four more years of that intense work," Sarles said Monday on the Kojo Nnamdi radio show on WAMU, The Examiner reported. The nearest Metro station to Germantown is the Red Line station at Shady Grove, near Gaithersburg.
