ReplyI am not concerned about appearance, except for better lighting. I would like to see MEANINGFUL design changes, such as a second elevator because having only one elevator to such a deep station was just ridiculous. There is nearly always a line and if there are people with strollers, bikes, scooters - well, then it can be a wait of 2-3 trips before you can squeeze onto the elevator. With the escalators out most of the time, sometimes the elevator is the only option, especially if you have a lot to carry.
But mostly I just want the trains to run on time, safely (tired of worrying about which car I am getting on and is it one of the safer ones), and I would really appreciate having better design in the cars (bench seating, more hang straps, no carpet).

ReplyGreat idea, but unfortunately, this company, like the many charities that collect used clothing, ships much of it overseas to developing countries. The dumping of cheap used clothing causes the textile and clothing industries in those countries to shrivel up. Some developing countries have actually banned the import of U.S. cast-offs. Read "Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy" by Georgetown economist Pietra Rivoli.
Here's one of many articles you can find on the subject:

ReplyPrivately held WeddingWire formed about two years ago and is partly owned by New York media and merchandising company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. That publicly owned business, founded by media personality Martha Stewart, paid $5 million for a 40 percent stake in WeddingWire about a year ago, according to the company's 2007 annual report and a news release.
(other source: Wikipedia)
The company was founded in 2005 by Timothy Chi, who was one of the founding members of Blackboard Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBB). -

Pradeep Ganguly, Montgomery County's economic development director, has been placed on indefinite leave while an investigation is conducted into a grant awarded to a company where his son is an executive officer.
Timothy L. Firestine, the county's chief administrative officer, ordered the personnel action and notified department employees during a staff meeting last week. Ganguly has headed the department for two years.
The investigation could determine whether Ganguly violated the county's ethics law when his department awarded a $25,000 grant to Bethesda wedding planning business WeddingWire, where his son is chief marketing officer. There is no time frame for the investigation, Firestine said.
Sonny Ganguly oversees customer acquisition and business development as well as marketing at WeddingWire, which provides online tools linking wedding planners with vendors.

ReplyI stand corrected, but it still bugs me that we gave this guy tax dollars. Plenty of people who want to open businesses who don't have a personal fortune and Martha Stewart backing. As I recall, the MoCo official running the program at the time was the father of someone who worked for the company.

ReplyMoCo gave this rich guy - he founded Blackboard and had backing from Martha Stewart Omnimedia - our tax dollars. So 2-3 years later he pulls up stakes and moves into DC.
MoCo needs to be more careful about not throwing away our tax dollars like this. -

ReplyBut it IS becoming expected and if they leave the law in place, people will expect it all the time, everyplace. The harm to the environment in the form of use and manufacture of an item from petroleum and in the form of waste and plastic bags all over the place - that's what this was about. It matters not where the bag was given - at a food store or at a clothing store - it has the same environmental impact and it has to stop. I am truly shocked and dismayed that Mr. Berliner and Mr. Leventhal - heroes in my eyes - would sponsor or support this legislation.

How, at age 40, does she own a home free-and-clear of a mortgage? Granted, she lives in Michigan, not DC, but still...That means she paid off her mortgage in about 20 years all the while saving a huge percentage of her income? I am guessing she inherited that house or some money.
Sorry but there's more to the story than we are being told.
