Germantown Boy Celebrates End of Cancer Treatment With Party in Montgomery Village

Rett Bush, 5, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in January 2011.

Lauded as a hero by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Rett Bush, 5, of Germantown was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia—blood cancer—in January 2011.

Rett’s cancer is in remission, but he still needed chemotherapy, according to a spokeswoman for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Those days are over, Rett's family is happy to announce. His last day of chemo was July 11.

On Saturday, he and his family will celebrate the end of his treatment—the end of 914 treatments, to be exact—with a private party in Montgomery Village.

 A spokeswoman for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society said the event, planned at 2 p.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church, included a magic show and a presentation of awards, plus plenty of cake and punch.

Rett, who’s about to turn 6, was among the honorees at last year’s Light the Night Walk in Rockville Town Square. 

The walk is a fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s National Capital Area Chapter. During the event, illuminated red, white and gold balloons are meant to symbolize they are not alone in their fight against cancer.
