Germantown Fireworks are Back With a Boom

Germantown Glory returns to the SoccerPlex after derecho-induced hiatus in 2012.

Thanks to the last year’s destructive derecho, Germantown’s big Independence Day fireworks show got canceled due to the weather.

But this year the show must go on.

On the Fourth of July, Montgomery County will host Germantown Glory at the SoccerPlex in the South Germantown Recreational Park.

The event kicks off 7 p.m. with a concert by Bobby and the Believers. The rain date is July 5.

Between 12,000 and 15,000 people attended Germantown Glory in 2011.

Last year, county officials decided to cancel its fireworks shows in Kensington and in Germantown in order to devote the county’s resources to clean-up efforts after an out-of-nowhere storm destroyed property and left thousands without power for days.

What: Germantown Glory
When:  7 p.m., Thursday, July 4.
Where:  Maryland SoccerPlex in the South Germantown Recreational Park, Boyds MD.

  • To reach the South Germantown Recreational Park from Interstate 270, take exit 15B (Route 118 south) toward Germantown; go for 2.8 miles and turn right onto Richter Farm Road. Go one mile and turn left onto Schaeffer Road. The park entrance is 0.3 miles on the right. Ample, free parking is available.

More:  Low lawn chairs, blankets and coolers are welcome. Food vendors will be on site. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.
